Overview

The Shih-Pom is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between a Shih Tzu and Pomeranian. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all dog breeds in the cross and understand that you can get any combination of the characteristics found in either breed. This designer breed is recognized by ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club).

A Shih-Pom, also called a Shiranian, is a cross between a Shih-Tzu and a Pomeranian. In addition to their small size and adorable looks, these little dogs are loyal, affectionate, and tend to have big personalities.

Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable canine organizations. The American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Designer Breed Registry, and more all recognize the Shiranian.

Temperament

Shih-Poms are true companion dogs that thrive on attention and affection from their favorite people. Because they are so small and can be easily injured by young children who are still mastering motor control and coordination, they tend to be a better fit for single owners or families with older children. As long as they are well-socialized and children know how to play gently with them, they do tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They also tend to be relatively open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking, which can become a nuisance behavior if you do not start to train your dog to stop barking early on.
